While Chris was chain harrowing one of our fields yesterday he came across this pair of antlers. We have found a couple of antlers before when hacking out (but not a pair) and they were given to the rider who was with us.
These are from one of the red deer stags who winter with us and we often saw him in our fields so it was very nice of him to leave us a present, unfortunately the second prong has been broken, probably, we think, during rutting.
The red deer is Britain’s largest mammal, standing 4ft tall at the shoulder. The roe deer, also seen locally , is the only other native species of deer. For more pictures see the previous post about red deer.
Another pair found today in one of our fields, this time spotted by eagle-eyed Bob. They were found within feet of each other. Quite a surprise to find two sets in two days dropped by a big stag.
